All of us want a picture-perfect smile, and whitening is becoming more and more popular thanks to its ability to brighten stained and discoloured teeth.
But the Australian Dental Association recently revealed that a lot of people are choosing cheap, sometimes even illegal treatments that can be done at home. While these kits may seem like a miracle cure, they can be dangerous and cause some serious harm to the teeth and gums.
What’s the problem with DIY kits?
According to a study conducted by the Australian Dental Association, more than two-thirds of people between the ages of 18 and 45 years old who have whitened their teeth didn’t go to a professional to do so. Instead, a lot of people opt to buy whitening kits online, or at chemists and beauty salons. The problem, however, is that only registered dentists are actually legally allowed to sell or use any teeth whitening products that contain more than six percent hydrogen peroxide. So, if you choose to get your whitening products from someone other than a professional, registered dentist, you run the risk of using a product that has not been properly regulated. Also, if someone other than a dentist performs the procedure, you are placing the health of your teeth in the hands of someone who does not necessarily fully understand the effects of hydrogen peroxide. This can lead to gum irritation and other oral damage caused by the use of illegal chemicals.
What is the better option?
There’s nothing wrong with a home whitening kit, provided you get it from a registered dentist. At DC Dental, we offer a kit that is completely safe and very easy to use. It contains bleaching products that work by whitening the enamel of the teeth, as well as custom-made trays that look similar to a mouth guard. When the whitening gel is applied to these trays, they can be secured to the teeth and used for around half an hour a day for a period of two or three weeks, depending on your desired outcome.
The important thing to note about this treatment is that you must come in and see us for a consultation first. This will give us the chance to check whether or not the treatment is right for you, and if it is suitable, we will be able to fabricate customised trays to fit your mouth correctly. We’ll also ensure that you understand exactly how to use the kit, and how much bleaching agent to apply each time.
