It’s essential that your child practices good oral hygiene habits at home, like brushing and flossing daily.
But a balanced, nutritious diet is also a key element when it comes to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Encourage your child to choose snacks that are good for them, for the sake of their overall wellbeing. Here are some of our suggestions …
Cheese is a great snack for kids because it’s packed with protein and calcium, plus it’s naturally sugar-free. It also helps to neutralise acid in the mouth, which is helpful in preventing tooth decay. Pack cheese sticks in your child’s lunchbox for an easy snack, or give them a slice to enjoy with an apple.
Another calcium-rich option, yoghurt also helps to strengthen teeth and bones and makes for a tasty snack or dessert. Choose natural, sugar-free types if you can and serve with fresh fruit for a little extra sweetness.
Berries and nuts
Cranberries contain polyphenols, a compound that helps to keep plaque from sticking to the surface of the teeth. The little berries can be a little sour, so be careful of choosing products that have been sweetened with sugar.
Nuts are another great snack idea because they are packed with vitamins and minerals that are good for overall health, plus they contain omega-3 fatty acids that help to strengthen teeth. They require a lot of chewing, which helps to increase saliva production, and helps to keep the mouth clean.
Crunchy fruits and veggies
Crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots require a lot of chewing, which is actually helpful in promoting the production of saliva. Also, the fibrous texture of these foods cleans the teeth, washing away plaque and bacteria as you eat.
Cut crunchy veggies into sticks for your little ones and serve with a healthy dip or homemade hummus. Apple slices can be enjoyed with some cheese, or on their own as a naturally sweet snack.
